Opportunities

Join the lab

We are a friendly, collaborative group working at the meeting point of plant ecology and genomics. Whether you love fieldwork, code, or both, we would be glad to hear from you.

PhD students

ARU is not currently part of a Doctoral Training Partnership, but the University does hold competitive budgets for a limited number of funded PhD studentships, and we actively pursue external funding; the lab's current PhD project is supported by a Cambridge Philosophical Society Sedgwick studentship.

Funded positions are always advertised on FindAPhD. If you have your own funding, or want to apply for a scholarship, get in touch early and we can develop a project together.

Postdoctoral fellows

We are happy to support applications to independent fellowship schemes from researchers whose interests overlap with ours in plant genome evolution, hybridisation, parasitic plants or bioinformatic method development.

Undergraduate & Master's projects

ARU students can carry out dissertation projects in the lab. Recent topics include:

  • Plant mitochondrial genome assembly and analysis
  • Comparative genomics of hybridisation
  • Transposable element evolution

Projects are largely computational, so they suit students who want to build real bioinformatics skills, and no prior coding experience is required.

Collaborations

We are always open to new collaborations, and grateful to the many colleagues who have worked with us over the years. If you have a question that needs genomes, graphs or a field experiment, let's talk.
